From the recording Saturn Song

Lemonade is a response to all the right-wing posturing around issues of race and privilege. I wrote it close to thirty years ago, and their tone has become, incredibly, more shrill and menacing with each passing year Oh. those awful poor people!

Lyrics

1. You can hear those people talking
You can hear the voice of Cain
When man just needs a hand out
He gets reasons, that explain
That it ain’t who does the dealin’
It’s just the way the game is played
So if all you get is lemons,
You’d best make lemonade

Chorus
Lemonade will make you pucker
It might even make you sick
‘cause there just ain’t that much sugar
on the short end of the stick

2. You can discuss my failings
From the comfort of your chair
And never once give a mention
Of the power that put you there
Of a thousand devel’s bargains
Judas’ trade
That keeps you in caviar
And millions on lemonade

Chours

Bridge

Yes, I am your brother
I’m the one you couldn’t keep
Who tags along, and drags you down
Disrupts your beauty sleep
You fulminate, pontificate
On the way things are ordained
And you wash your hands, and you wash your hands
But you never, never get rid of the stains
The bloody stains

3. So when the false coin of your courage
Rattles hollow in my cup
I hope that you will pardon me
If I don’t bother to look up
And kiss the hand that starves me
The one that has betrayed
I guess you get a little sour
When you live on lemonade

Chorus
